First Blood: The Roster of compLexity Gaming
On April 27th, ‘First Blood’ was mistakenly shown behind the celebrating players of compLexity.black after taking game four of their NA LCS Summer Split relegation series versus Team Coast, winning them the series. Though it was quickly changed to the correct ‘Victory’, First Blood seemed an appropriate description of the series and its implications.
Before this year’s Spring Split, three of the five players on coL.black, now known simply as compLexity Gaming, faced the Evil Geniuses in the spring relegation series under the moniker Determined Gaming. Though EG won that series to retain their spot in LCS, Determined stayed in the NA Challenger scene and were subsequently picked up by the compLexity organization. Fighting their way through the Summer Split relegations took everything the newly christened team had, but it was only first blood, and coL is out for more. Here are the players of one of the newest teams in the NA LCS:
Jonathan “Westrice” Nguyen
Position- Top Lane
Claim to Fame- Top-tier Akali player since her release in 2010
Jonathan Nguyen is a top laner who has had a long, winding history with the League of Legends and the LCS. He started out as a sub for Team SoloMid before joining Epik Gamer. He also served a stint with Curse before joining the compLexity roster, then known as FX Open and going through two more name changes before being taken in by compLexity. In all, Westrice has been out of LCS for over two years. Though we won’t be seeing any more Akali out of him, getting back into the NA LCS has been a long time coming, but he’s back for more.
Ram "Brokenshard" Djemal
Position- Jungle
Claim to Fame- Dying to red buff in the 2013 Summer Split relegation series
Ram Djemal is the first LCS professional to hail from Israel. The 20-year-old has played competitive League of Legends since early 2012 and has never failed to show himself as a strong jungler, loving to invade and fight the enemy in their own territory. He has played for teams such as Dragonborns and TCM Gaming in Europe before moving to North America to join compLexity, then known as To Be Determined. To quote Djemal when asked about his play style, “I like killing things. Killing things are good.” He will have the opportunity to “kill things” with the best of the best in the NA LCS 2014 Summer Split.
Neil “Pr0lly” Hammad
Position- Mid Lane
Claim to Fame- Extremely aggressive play style
Neil Hammad has been with the compLexity organization longer than anyone else on the current roster, having joined in April of last year and staying with them until joining Determined Gaming this January. The team would of course be picked up by compLexity only one month later. He’s known for trolling on Reddit threads that involve him, sporting his iconic Kennen flair (a champion he is known for). Now he has the chance to play on the big stage, and the real fun begins.
Robert “ROBERTxLEE” Lee
Position- AD Carry
Claim to Fame- Building Zhonya’s Hourglass frequently on AD Carries on stream
Robert Lee has been around the amateur scene for what seems like forever, being a popular streamer on Twitch and playing AD Carry for several different teams since 2012. In spring of 2013, he suffered an injury and lost most of his memories of the last six years. Most people thought his competitive LoL career was over, but he persevered and regained most of his memories and former skill. Aside from a sub position for Vulcun/XDG Gaming, his only team since then has been the compLexity roster. He’s one half of the BubbaxLee bot lane, and he’s going to be competing against the likes of Doublelift (but I don’t think he’ll be playing Blitzcrank against him, which he is known to do on stream).
Royce “Bubbadub” Newcomb
Position- Support
Claim to Fame- His beautiful mustache, his wife’s ultimatum on his career
Royce Newcomb is the other half of the BubbaxLee lane. When looking at the rest of the compLexity roster, Newcomb has been in competitive LoL for a comparatively short amount of time. The only team he’s ever competed with other than his current squad is Reality Check Gaming, an amateur team. Newcomb is also one of the only married professional LoL players; one of Bubba’s most famous moments was when a post was made on /r/leagueoflegends about him. His wife had told him if he didn’t make it to LCS within 6 months, he would have to quit. He obviously convinced her to let him have an extension, as he has just qualified for LCS 10 months after the Reddit post.
Congratulations and good luck to compLexity in the NA LCS Summer Split!
