The Bitch’s Bite Staff
The Dog Trainers
Nathaniel Cassier, Human, Age 23
He has brown hair, a blank look, and is generally neither remarkable nor attractive. He wears plain clothes and tends to keep his head down when there is trouble.
By far the most moral of the staff, Nathaniel, or Nathan to most who know him, is a serious, depressed young man who works for the Bite to support his family. In particular, he dotes on his younger sister. He works with great dedication to keep her from having to start whoring. Unknown to him, she has begun to resent his constant fawning and feels as though he isn’t treating her as a capable person. Possessed of a keen intelligence, he has gained a firm idea of the Bite’s true purpose while also keeping himself far out of it. He’s very good with the dogs, and whenever one acts out the other trainers tend to call him over to calm it down. His dogs are made violent through selective, expert breeding. He has been working at the Bite since he was only 15.
Arkos Tolkier, Half-Elf, Age 35
He takes after his elven parent, being tall, thin and possessing prominent pointy ears. He has long straw blonde hair which he constantly frets about, and looks a bit too feminine for the comfort of those around him.
Arkos is vain and petty. His features are not all that attractive, and it is fairly plain he is overcompensating for it in all the wrong ways. Cruel and sadistic to his dogs, he turns them violent through drugs and torture, which makes them weak and rarely successful. Common betters know to indentify his and bet against them. It is getting so predictable that Jacel is beginning to consider firing the man. Arkos has a rivalry going with Olkavir, particularly in dog training, which he is losing badly.
Olkavir Tannik, Human, Age 31
Olkavir is a tall, wide shouldered man with a happy grin which conflicts with his dreadfully sour and sardonic personality.
He is unafraid to tell others when they are being stupid, which contributes to Arkos’s hatred of him. He is world weary and has connections to many crime syndicates throughout the city; he justifies his actions by saying that everyone else is just as bad. He works for Jacel very loyally, considering him a rare spot of honor among the streets; however, for the sake of appearances he often voices his contempt for the man, encouraging others to confide in him information which he then sends off to Jacel. He is a very good dog trainer and has a talent which borders on magical for whipping dogs into a murderous frenzy.
Mioco Nian, Human, Age 16
A tiny whisp of a girl, her wide, large eyes and soft features make her the last person you would expect to report to a crime lord. Regardless, she does so often, listening around the bar while dodging drunken molesters, or hiding in the vents, which her tiny frame slides through easily. She tends to be quiet initially, but as a person gets to know her she becomes more and more snarky.
She trains a couple dogs, but she isn’t very good at it. She’s on the verge of addiction to a couple drugs, and knows how to manufacture some. The Bite’s increasing turns to the importation of drugs rather than the manufacturing of them has miffed her slightly. No one is certain where she came from, except for Jacel, whom she is fanatically loyal to. Rumor would have it that she came from a highborn family who were reported to the judges and wiped out for practicing magic, but there is little evidence for the theory; she talks with a perfect common street drawl and seems to have been hitting the lower class drugs for a while. Her ethnicity is also a bit off, as she has obvious ancestry from Tiang Xia mixed with her otherwise Marnian features.
The Bartender
Joshua Bellim, Human, Age 34
Tall, dark, wielding a glass eye, and with a charismatic bit of black stubble about his chin, he gives off the impression of a charmer who has seen a few slightly better days. He hates jokes about walking into a bar.
Also known as “Joshie” to the drunk, he is a rough-and-tumble kind of man. He believes in the school of hard knocks, learning from experience, and considers the dog fighting ring a good symbol of the daily struggles of mortals. He’ll only elaborate on these views when asked, but if asked he’ll talk a person’s ear off. Rumor has it that he used to run with gangs, and that he once broke a man’s fingers for drunkenly walking out with a glass.
The Announcer
Adamanth Hellia, Human, Age 41
A cold, no-nonsense man in person, he works for the Bite as the ring’s announcer. He can fake emotion expertly when doing his job as announcer, making the dog fights seem larger than life and awe-inspiring. At all other times, he rarely bothers hiding his cold and callous nature. The rest of the staff usually call him Adam.
He has firm, blocky features and short, curly grey hair that make him very reminiscent of ancient Greek heroes and generals. He seems to enjoy enhancing the image, wearing slightly out-of-date robes and drinking wine. Behind closed doors, he works as second-in-command for the Bite. He is the most knowledgeable of all the staff, and often sells and buys information when Jacel is out of the house or busy. He is also more directly involved in the drug trade. Though Jacel ultimately has the final say, he manages much of the daily affairs and distribution of various illicit substances throughout the historic district.
He follows where Jacel leads because he has trouble inspiring and convincing people to follow him. He can put emotion in his voice but he doesn’t have the intuition necessary to use it effectively on the individual level. He has worked for the Bite for most of his life, and is loyal to his position if not its owner. He prefers not to take chances with his job.
The Guards
Medico Alentivi, Human, Age 28
Tough, simple, and quiet, Medico does his job. He is of average height and wears some simple armor, mostly thin plate. He has dark brown hair and lazy blue eyes, with generic features and a slim but firm build. He is a foreign mercenary from Eyropa who was looking for more stable work, and found it working as a bouncer at the Bite. He tends to guard the back rooms and dog yard. He uses a knife and a sword in battle, but also has a cudgel for warding off people in a nonlethal manner.
He has begun experimenting with drugs and is encouraging Thomas to do the same. However, he’s nowhere near becoming an addict, and Jacel has told him on no uncertain terms that if he ever shows up for work high he loses his job.
Thomas Ward, Human, Age 23, and Anthony Ward, Human, Age 25
These fair-haired brothers are former guardsmen. They were brought into the Bite’s staff when Thomas insisted on investigating a member of Marn aristocracy for magic use and other types of corruption. Unfortunately, the brothers were caught snooping around, and when they failed to present any evidence the aristocrat swiftly arranged for their removal from the guard force, considering their investigation an unforgivable insult to his honor and waste of his time. Having few other prominent skills, the brothers got into the Bite to serve as bouncers there, having previously frequented the place as customers. They tend to excuse their choice to work at the Bite by citing circumstance, if asked about it by the other guards, many of whom they used to know. Jacel equipped the brothers with muskets upon learning that the guard had trained them in the use of such weapons.
Thomas is by far the more outgoing of the two, being loud, brash, and reckless. He has straight, faintly blonde hair, brown eyes and a short beard and mustache. He claims he is unlucky, and has a tendency to turn up in the least likely places. It was his goading which prompted the brothers on their ill-advised quest to topple the nobleman.
Anthony, meanwhile, is distant and lethargic. He tends to be lazy and follow his younger brother’s lead. He is clean shaven, but otherwise looks very similar to his brother. He is studious and intelligent, and it was on his suggestion they came to work at the Bite, having a much better head for long-term planning than his brother when motivated to use it. He is the most naturally skilled of the Bite’s staff when it comes to combat.
Cerranel Tel’Emmera, Elf, Age 46
He’s quick, lithe, and knows the tricks of the trade when it comes to theft, crime and cheating. He wears his black hair in a ponytail and has constantly twitching, birdlike blue eyes. Carranel prefers fighting dirty, often refusing to draw his weapon and using whatever random object is nearby. An exile from Darlerone, Carranel came to Marn a decade ago, where he quickly fell in with all sorts of sleazy activities. In particular he enjoys brawling and street fighting, which has given him a few scars which don’t yet detract from his looks. He has a few friends around the underground, all of which he’d gleefully stab in the back for Jacel and would gleefully stab him in the back for their bosses.
His savvy is the reason he was hired, as he is able to defend against the tricks thieves are likely to pull through understanding of them. He is a little bit of a mental sadist, and if he has someone under his power he will mess with them a bit before doing his job properly. He is the second best fighter the staff has to offer, and loves to show it off by challenging mercenaries to scraps or starting barfights when off duty.
