Player Screen Name: Esme
Character Name: Esme Walquer
Age: 28
Race: Human, 1/4 Elven thanks to an Elven grandfather with a lust for human girls.
NPC Parents: Kenath and Jorgia Walquer

Physical Description: Green-eyed, dark haired Esme stands at about five feet and four inches and weighs around 135 pounds. When traveling, she usually wears a hooded wool cloak over a nicely made linen skirt and blouse with doeskin slippers wrapped in more wool. Her father had taught her the surest way to pass as poor was to look like you couldn't afford any boots. When casual, its the slippers with the linen garments. Esme isn't really the type to show herself off until it becomes advantageous. Also, she is not one for the battlefield, and keeping a low profile helps ward off bandits or marauders should she travel. When hunting, she wears laced leather pants and some boots instead of a skirt and slippers.

Posessions: A dog (nothing special, just a normal pet dog, a small coppery mostly-Corgie named Charlie), some simple jewelry of no special consequence, a bow and arrows. Allowed to direct billing for her expenses to her father.

Residence: Lives in her parents' home in the residential district. Not the finest portion of it but clean enough.

Abilities/Powers: Esme has an odd mind. She call control her dreams, call up past dreams, pause, backtrack, and skip ahead in her own dreams. Sometimes she wonders if she is in another world when she sleeps or not. She is completely aware of herself when she dreams. As a (bored middle class) teen she discovered she could slip into the dreams of others if she slept near them or slept with a lock of hair or something very dear to them under her pillow. She requires something of the physical person around her in order to penetrate the dreamer's mind, so she is not the same as someone who is simply astral projecting.

Generally, her presence in the dream was unnoticed though sometimes someone would remark "I dreamt about you last night, it was the strangest thing..." With some practice she learned that she could manipulate the dreams of others much like she could her own dreams. This was when she first became concerned she might have magic in her, and blamed her partial Elven heritage. She resists the urge to tamper with the dreams of others, and feels conflicted about this ability that seems so natural that may be a secret sin.

When in a dreaming state, she is essentially sleeping. She can feel like hours, even days, have passed when she awakens though it was just one night. She is more vulnerable than the average sleeper because her mind is so hyperfocused on the dream. It's an extreme form of REM sleep. A person walking through the room wouldn't wake her up, but someone attacking her would wake her. Should someone murder her in her sleep, it is likely she would awaken from death throes and simply die.

When in her own dreams, she doesn't seem to come to harm. Often she awakens quickly if she enters a nightmare, but she's had dreams where she's had battle and come out of it just fine, but in her head its her own rules.

When in the dreams of others the rules seem to be a bit different. A person with a strong mind, especially a person skilled in magic, would be highly likely to detect her presence and may either confront her or push her away. A person with no magic skill would be unlikely to notice the difference and if she talked to them in the dream, they would wake thinking that they had a wierd dream about some girl. Whether or not they recognize her in reality later depends on the individual and how well they remember dreams. She can talk to people in their dreams if she chooses, or just watch what is happening, but she can not normally manipulate the pace of their dreams unless it was an extremely weakwilled person. She can manipulate the setting in another's dream but must compete with the dreamer's mind for that.

She is unable to harm others through dreaming, just spy and interact a little. She's never interacted with a person that had magic, so she doesn't know if they can hurt her or not. Her prejudices cause her to assume they could harm her, and that is likely so depending on how powerful the person is and if they have much experience with lucid dreaming or the astral plane. Since she is unable to harm others, attacking or killing them in a dream would not harm their bodies, and would likely just wake them up, at which point she would also awaken in her own body. Whether or not she could die in another person's dream is hard to tell. Generally if the person became violent toward her she would remove herself from the dream. Again, she has never interacted in a dream with a magic user and it may be possible that such a person could physically harm her with magic if they realized she was an alien presence and attacked purposefully.

As for fighting in the real world, she is a passable markswoman. She learned from her father on occasional hunting trips as a girl, and now sometimes goes hunting for smaller game with her dog, Charlie, at heel even though he sometimes causes her to lose more targets than gain them.

Weaknesses/Flaws: Generally, just a moderate human girl. Not especially strong and not born casting magic out her fingers. She fears being outsted for being different and wants to fit in with her people. She blames her Elven heritage for her magic use. She considers herself a sinner. Esme wants to be like the normal human girls she grew up with, and has a prejudice against outsiders, especially magic users. To be seduced into a life of espionage and to embrance her magic side, she would have to overcome a lot of preconcieved ideas and habits, as well as learn to accept the reality of herself.

Childhood/History: Grew up around the markets close to the Industrial District. Esme's human father, Kenath Walquer, had once been a traveling merchant and then settled in Marn opening a shop when his half-elf wife Jorgia became pregnant with Esme. She was a normal girl for her youth and as adolescence kicked in and her brain became more developed she became more concious of her dream state. In her teen years she began toying with her awareness in her sleep, learning to call up previous dreams or manipulate her dreams in various ways. The dreaming quickly became her treasured secret.

By chance, when she was 15, she had a friend sleeping at her home one night and found that from sleeping next to the other girl she was able to "watch" the dreams of her friend. This opened a whole new realm for her of trying to insert her mind into other people's dreams. She found it worked best to think about the person as she went to sleep, and then pull the person up in her dream, and somehow she seemed to cross over into what they saw and did. Somehow, her friend was never the wiser to her experiments. Unfortunately this lead to some heartache for Esme in her early twenties, but that is a story for another time.

In reflecting on the heartach she reasoned what she was doing was a sin, and should be surpressed. For many years she resisted the urge to use this skill for any reason. Time heals all wounds, ofcourse, and Esme is once again drawn to her strange abiltiy.

Goals: She has potential to be of use in espionage, being that she keeps a low profile by her own nature, could probe dreams for information, and can move rather quietly when she wants to. She is not unattractive and could wile her way close to a person if needed. It was the thrill of sneaking into and spying what was going on in other people's minds that she became addicted to in adolescence, and a part of her yearns for that secret, dangerous game that she's surpressed for so many years. She feels like she needs to explore and understand this part of herself. On the other hand, she also thinks she needs to resist this temptation and strive for purity. She has fear and admiration for her government and military. Her greatest goal is to be at peace with herself.

I had a few questions for you last night when you went to bed, so I'll ask them here for you to see later.

First of all, I wanted to know what exactly she is capable with her dream manipulation magic? Is it just that she can change and control her own dreams and others? Is her power limited to say going into the dreams of others and giving them nightmares and possibly learning information from the person? Or is she able to hurt somebody in their dreams somehow? What happens if she kills the other person in their dream? What if she were to die in the other person's dream? Is her body more vulnerable to attack when she is in the other person's dream? What would happen if something happened to her body when she is in a dream?

I would like to see a few more flaws to make her feel a bit more real. I would like to see something that helps give us more a feel for a personality. I like to think of weaknesses not so much as things that make your character weak, but future plot devices for you to use to put her in a situation where she might not be in control and she has to struggle to get through whatever is stopping her from reaching her goals. These things make it possible to grow and change and learn from their experiences.
