Alaïs Kellyn
Age: 17
Race: Human
Physical Description: Very petite/slender, almost starved looking if anything. Long burnt copper colour hair worn unbound. Short, roughly 5’4. Blue eyes that change shade depending on the light. Small breasted.
If she was a little more rounded out she could be considered attractive, but for the most part she is too gaunt and thin for men to consider.
Possessions:
• Three dresses of light grey, brown and black homespun.
• Four sets of underwear.
• One pair of worn light brown leather shoes.
• One old leather-bound book of children’s stories.
• One necklace (round white stone with a pattern etched in gold on it. It has a hole in the middle and is hung from a leather cord)
• 300 Bishani (stolen from her mother's savings)
• One small, sharp kitchen knife worn bound to the right leg with leather straps (stolen from her mother's kitchen)
• A few sheets of paper, pen and ink
Combat Abilities:
Small and quick, she is hard to catch, and would rather run than fight. Even so, she carries a knife and practices how she thinks you are supposed to use it every day, though she has never been taught. She is inexperienced in combat and though stronger than she looks, probably easy to defeat.
Powers and strengths:
Having been beaten for practising magic by her Puradyne mother, she has never had much chance to discover or develop her powers. She knows she has ability but is afraid of it. In the past she has unlocked doors and lit candles with magic, as well as warmed herself when cold, but other than that she has no idea of her powers, despite them being fairly strong.
Due to her upbringing she has a strong moral code and sense of propriety, with a desire to help other people when she can.
Though she was brought up as a Puradyne, she believes that she would not have been given powers if she were not meant to use them. She has shown that she has great strength of will by defying both her mother and religion by experimenting with magic throughout her youth.
Weaknesses and flaws:
Because of her upbringing she is very shy and cautious, as well as being very naive and innocent. She tends to agree with others to avoid conflict. She is also faced with a great internal dilemma as she tries to balance her religion and blossoming magical powers.
History:
Brought up on a farm on the very outskirts of Shim by her single mother Celeste, Alaïs has led a very sheltered life. She has always been confined to her house except for helping to tend the farm. She has never known who her father was, only that he was killed before she was born, although she has some doubts about this.
Celeste is a very devout Puradyne and when Alaïs started to show signs of magical ability at age four, she was severely beaten. Every time since then that she has done anything magical, deliberately or accidentally, she has been beaten and confined to her room without food or water for three days at a time. When simply asking about her ability she is given the same treatment.
The only source of entertainment in her childhood were two large, leather-bound books. One was a book of children’s stories, the kind with a moral to it and colourful pictures in the margins. The other was a copy of the Tomes.
Her necklace is her only piece of jewellery and only luxury. She does not take it off. Her mother gave it to her for her sixteenth birthday.
A few months after her seventeenth birthday, Alaïs accidentally set fire to the barn. She was trying to light a candle with her magic at the time, when she should have been tending to the chickens. Celeste beat her within an inch of her life and locked her in the cold, dark basement for five days.
After this Alaïs decided she had had enough. One day during the summer her mother went inside to take a break from the heat. Alais saw this as her opportunity to leave and so took the travel sack she had prepared from the barn and left Shim forever. Her story begins on her arrival in Marn.
