I'm being offered a couple hundred bucks to place some ads on the front page of the site.

They would be text-only ads, but unfortunately they need to be on the front page.

I'm very inclined to agree to this deal. Money is money, and it more than pays for the forums each year. I'm just wondering what you all think of it.

If I was more rich, I wouldn't consider it at all. I could invest some of it back into the website somehow. Maybe make up for it. And it is only the front page...

The example I was shown, that they already have on roleplaygateway.com, was for an online poker game. Not even related to what we do, sadly.

Basically he wants a sentence or two, anywhere on the front page, within which to hide a link to a website like an online poker site. Maybe I can get him to word it like "If this site interests you, feel free to visit our sponsor at xxx" or something. At least that wouldn't cheapen the page too much.

That doesn't sound too bad. As long as there's no flashing pictures or anything, I hardly mind. You should buy us all presents with the money though. Especially me, since it's my birthday.

Unless they're those really intrusive ones (with the flashing and the sound), it sounds like a good deal to me.

I would have no problem with this.

As long as it doesn't flash colors or make noise or is really really big and has to be right in the middle of the page, go for it. If you can put this real little link to some ad at the bottom of the front page where nobody is likely to really notice it, than I don't see a problem with doing it. Can you make the text for the ad pretty? Can it match the text already on the site?

Ok, joking aside. You know I'd take the money. Like you said, it will more than pay for the costs of the site. As seems the consensus, unless it's extremely loud, flashy, large, annoying, or any other irritating thing that ads are usually, I say go for it.

I hate those ads that pop up and take up 90% of your web browser just when you scroll over it... it better not be like that...

Consensus is Go! As for me, I honestly don't mind even if it's not just a tiny link at the bottom, so long as it doesn't flash or inform me I'm the Xth number visitor to somewhere I'd rather not know. It can be a classy ad. You know how to make things classy (I think).

There will be 2 links, text only, hidden within 2 paragraphs of some sort of spam text on the front page. You won't come across it much because it is only on the front page.

I'll put a bit over half of it back into the forums to pay for a year and maybe give out t-shirts or something else inane but fun.
