Name: Illae (Ih-lay)
Age: 20
Race: Half human, half elf
Height: 5’6
Weight: 120

Physical Description: Lithe would be the word to describe her. Everything about Illae is long and thin—her neck, her arms, legs, fingers, toes—and whenever she moves, it is with a grace like one skilled at dance. Though her willowy appearance might lend itself to the idea of weakness or fragility, this is not at all the case. While she is not exceptionally strong, she is not weak either, and as she moves the outlines of her muscles can be clearly seen.

Illae has deep, warm skin, a rich dark brown with red tones. Her eye color is equally as strong, a strange type of green/brown/gold that stands in stark contrast to her skin color. She has ears that are slightly pointed, not so much so as to call her Elfin, but enough that--upon inspection--one might question if she were at all. Her hair is dark brown, and tends to redden or become a light auburn color with sun exposure. As a result, her hair is often a mix of colors, darkest in the winter, or when she has been living inside for a while. Illae’s hair is virtually a mane, lightly crimped, and framing her face like a wide halo. Feathered around her head, it could accurately be described as a lion’s mane, so she often keeps it back in a long braid that reaches below her shoulders.

Her clothing is somewhat weathered gypsy garb, a blue/grey ruffled top and flowing skirt with a purple fabric belt, and tall black boots. She has several piercings in her ears, as well as one in her nostril and belly button. One can tell that her clothes are old and have endured many washings—she may live as a vagabond, but isn’t dirty unless she has to be. She wears a red stone on a small braided rope around her neck, under her shirt. Also starting at her neck, there is a long, jagged scar that runs from the bottom to the top of her breast.

Illae is a beautiful young woman, with unique and distinct features. Though she is gay and lively, there is often a tired look around her eyes. Playing somewhat of a matriarch role in her family, Illae has lived a lifetime of stress, bearing the brunt of the family’s burdens, and putting her own needs to the side. She most often has to hide her true emotions and desires so that others in her family can advance. She does so usually without protest, but her eyes often tell another tale, and will reveal a deep despair, hidden within. There is a sparkle in those eyes that shines whenever she is truly enjoying herself, and her smile is quite charming. It’s no wonder she’s as good a trickster as she is.

Possessions: Illae most often lives as a wanderer and a thief, and as such has many little sundry items which she keeps in her large leather messenger bag.
--200 Bishan on her person from her most recent theft
--A black hooded coat that she wears, weather permitting.
--Small musical instruments
--Long dagger sheathed at her waist
--Smaller dagger concealed in boot.
--Tin can of small stolen and/or personal possessions
--Various maps, bandages, and a few other items

Powers or Strengths:
Illae is half elf, and has manifestations of magical ability, though they are not consistent, neither does she know how to control them. Currently her magical ability has manifested itself in making plants spontaneously grow, and in protecting herself. She also has the ability to sense magic/the astral plane. She does not quite understand any of it at all, and often when it does happen, her magic is not that strong and is short lived. Quite often her magic manifests while sleeping, and she awakes to find what has taken place (ex: many vines having grown)
--A good thief
--Good performer
--Good at stalking around unseen/unheard
--Good at lying/pretending/convincing others
--Good at escaping various situations
--Good with slight-of-hand tricks
--Physically and mentally dexterous, fast and skillful mover/climber/runner
--Good with knives/knife fights
--Good with animals
--Very artistic. Good at dancing, singing, playing various instruments, acting

Weaknesses:
The red stone she wears was sold to her by some wily fairy, who promised it would concentrate and strengthen her magic. The stone itself is just that—only a stone—but she doesn’t know that. It is by her own concentration and direction that her magic is used/amplified through the stone (and the times are few that she ever tries or is able)
--Not very strong, can’t fight very well outside of using a knife
--Can’t control her magic, and more often than not it is weak and short lasting
--Can be controlling, takes on too much responsibility
--Very distrusting, strong willed, often refuses help
--Fear of ultimately being alone
--Has nerve damage in left arm, which sometimes leads to it giving out unexpectedly
--Being controlling and distrusting, she can often be judgmental. Quite often she comes off as rude, which causes people not to like her, though she is a good person.
--Because she chooses to hide her emotions, when she becomes overwhelmed it often results in emotional breakdowns or extreme outbursts of anger, both which cause her to be emotionally/physically vulnerable and/or destructive to others.
--Currently has a wound on her side, reason for staying in Thar Shaddin

History: Illae is the child of two half elf, half human parents, both of whom—like their daughter—presented far more human physical characteristics than elfin. Her father, Rogan, was a strict Puradyne who was raised in Marn, and developed a deep self-loathing, and a hatred for all magic and magical creatures. His own parents had died when he was a teenager, and so vehemently had he denied his elfin heritage, that some town’s people actually began to believe that he was, in fact, fully human.

Much of Illae’s mother Joli’s past was a mystery, as she moved to Marn alone sometime in her teenage years and met Illae’s father at the university. It wasn’t long before they fell in love and were married, and then it wasn’t long before Joli was pregnant with Illae. During this time, however, Rogan was completely unaware that Joli was at all magical, so long had he disconnected himself from any magical inclinations he might have.

It wasn’t until after the baby was born that Rogan witnessed his wife playing with the child with light displays of magic. Enraged and disgusted, Rogan beat his wife to death, and then disposed of both the body and the 1 month old baby in the Ofriyu Mar. Not long after, Rogan left Marn, no one knows where he is now.

Amazingly, even at her young age, Illae’s magical ability preserved her from the waves. She was found on the banks of the river by a gypsy woman, Bryga, and given the name “Illae.” Bryga was one member of a gypsy caravan, The Family, a rogue group of individuals of different races and homelands. Illae found herself in the group as one among many strays, and she was raised with them, learning various arts, skills, and thieving abilities. With them, she works as a performer and a thief. The Family is a tight knit group, loyal to each other, but underhanded, and potentially dangerous to outsiders.

Illae was a precocious child, and her intelligence and mental/emotional fortitude was noted by The Family, and abused. She was assigned a disproportionate amount of responsibilities for a child/a single person, and is often the one used as a scapegoat. Illae is often guilted into “Taking one for The Family,” and bears the brunt of punishments for the “good of everyone else.”

This is, in fact, how Illae has ended up in Marn. During The Family’s latest robbery in Setkhantos, the plans went awry, and they were discovered midway. Illae escaped with the rest of The Family, but they still feared that they would be hunted down, unless at least one of them was captured, to appease the officers. Bryga, along with the rest of the family, urged Illae to allow herself to be caught, for the good of the family. They would come back for her in a couple days, when things died down. Sacrificing herself once again, Illae went back. She was arrested and beaten for thievery. Days passed with no sign or word from The Family, and Illae finally escaped on her own, by ship. Over the years, The Family has thus left Illae in many situations, some life threatening, where by sheer luck or her own ability she has been able to escape and travel back to her group. Now alone in Thar Shaddin, she doesn’t know where her gypsy family is, and must heal from her prison wounds before she sets out to find them.

Illae doesn’t know much of where she was born, except that she was found along the banks of Ofriyu, or even that she is part elf. She knows that she possess some magical capabilities, and has seen magic all around the places she has lived/visited. She has never put much practice into her own, but cannot imagine a place where magic is outlawed completely. This is the first time since she was born that she has come back here, and she doesn't even know that this is where the Ofriyu Mar is.
