Physical Description: To most human eyes, Shyael still looks like a teenager even though she's technically an adult. She's a little on the short side and kind of skinny, giving her an almost frail physical appearance. Her ears are very pointed, even for an elf. If one were to look at her pale lavender eyes, it wouldn't be difficult to tell that she was blind. Her auburn hair reaches her waist, and to keep it out of her face, she braids some of it and then ties those two braids back.
Her clothes consist of a maroon-colored one piece short dress that's form fitting and stops a little bit above her knees. The top part of this one piece is held up by thin straps over her shoulders. Layered on top of this dress is another piece of cloth, this one being white tinted with lavender. It is attached to the straps of her one-piece at her chest and drapes down to her knees. There's a buckle on her left hip that holds it closed around her torso, and it flaps around freely from her waist down. She wears arm warmers made of the same material as this top piece of cloth, as well as simple brown boots.
Possessions: Other than a few basics, Shyael doesn't often carry much on her person except for her flute. The only time she carries much money on her is when she's taking some home to her family.
Powers or Strengths: She has an ear and a talent for music. The tunes she plays on her flute can often help to calm someone with a hot temper or comfort one who is stressed out or facing hardship. Some have accused her of using magic to pull this off, but as far as she knows she can do no such thing. Also, because of her blindness, her other senses - especially her hearing and sense of smell - are much sharper than normal, even for an elf. Shyael is also a fast runner with high stamina and endurance, so these extra-sharp senses are a huge help when she needs to run away from something.
Weaknesses: Shyael is completely blind. She has been dealing with the handicap since a freak accident at the age of two and, while it certainly causes problems for her at times, she has learned to at least get around and travel with little trouble. Because she grew up blind, she's very insecure and painfully shy, and therefore sometimes has difficulties interacting with anyone other than her family.
History:
Shyael grew up on a small farm on the outskirts of Shim with her parents and little sister. When she was two, she and a few friends were playing when one of them got a little rough and started throwing rocks. One of them hit her in the head in just the right place, and she ended up losing her eyesight. This was just before her sister was born.
Shyael had some difficulties in learning to deal with her handicap, but after a few years she started to figure it out and soon had little trouble getting around and helping out around the house. Her father crafted a flute for her as a way to express herself - as it was obvious she was insecure and shy due to her disability - and it took her almost no time at all to get the hang of it.
When she was fifteen, her mother got word that her father had been murdered by muggers on the road as he was traveling into Marn. After that, it became very difficult for the widow with two young children to maintain the farm by herself, and it wasn't long before it fell apart.
The year after her father's death, her mother fell into a state of depression and her health started to falter due to their now poor living conditions. Shyael finally decided to move to the city - against her mother's wishes - so that she could earn some money and help her mother. So while her sister agreed to take care of their mother, Shyael went to Marn and started performing with her flute in just about any establishment that would let her in.
She doesn't get paid much for this, but it's enough to help out her mother and sister. Every couple of months she travels back home to drop off the money, only to head straight back to Marn and get to work. At the place where she's living, she has an agreement with the elderly land owner that she performs for the other tenants for free in exchange for not having to pay rent. If it wasn't for this arrangement, she wouldn't be making enough to support the rest of her family, so she agrees without argument.
