Thad Djys comes from an old Thar Shaddin family of scoundrels and thieves. He learned the trade from childhood and now at age 35 he is an old hand at it, clever, nefarious, and mostly looked up to by the clan. Thad never married and as far as he knows has no children. That doesn't mean he hasn't had girlfriends. He has a small, unobtrusive house on the edge of Marn city. But this is not where he keeps his booty. The clan has a number of hideouts throughout Thar Shaddin as well as the family estate which is really a keep located near the river but far from towns and cities. Thieving has provided them over the centuries with quite a bit of wealth.

Thad dresses in black most of the time which makes him invisible at night and he has so thoroughly acclimated himself to sneaking around that even during the day when he is not working, he walks slightly bent, with a quick but careful gait. Of course the people of Marn know that he's a thief, but no one has ever been able to catch him in any crime, except once when he was ten years old. As a result they must tolerate him, but the finer burghers certainly aren't inclined to associate with him if they can avoid it.

Thad is human, but his ancestry is not completely pure. In any case, aside from his somewhat bent back, he is actually not a bad-looking man of average size with brilliant green eyes and dark reddish hair which he keeps hidden under a black cap.

Thad carries with him the necessary tools of a thief's trade. He also has an ancient dagger which he inherited. The hilt is embedded with a large number of small jewels and mirrors. It's properties seem to be out of the ordinary and Thad has mastered them. If it is magic, it is so old that no one knows who created it or exactly what the magic is. In any case the magic doesn't work unless its user has mastered the use of the weapon. In Thad's hands it seems inerrant. It is rumored that it will kill instantly if that is the thief's wish, so presumably people have seen this happen. Otherwise it's aim (or Thad's aim) is perfect even if thrown a long distance (and it flies further than one would expect of such a weapon when hurled). It also seems to change color at times and can blend into the background if it's not in Thad's hands. This could be caused by the jewels and mirrors in the handle.

Thad is not an assassin although if he has to kill he will. He prefers not to get himself into a situation where he would have to. He is thus not known as a killer and in fact, there are stories that several times in the past, he has helped innocent people, especially poor people who were in mortal danger for one reason or other. Since poor people in general have little to fear from the thieves anyway, Thad is not only tolerated in the poor parts of town, but can even count on a certain sympathy. But maybe it was all calculated on his part. After all, that makes it easier for him to do his work, having a place where he can fade away when he's being followed. If things get a bit too hot in Marn for one reason or other, Thad can go off to any of the clan's hideouts, making himself scarce for as long as necessary.

If Thad has any weaknesses perhaps one is that he is sometimes lonely. To be sure, he has lots of relatives whom he meets occasionally, sometimes even working together with them on larger jobs. But he has no one he is intimate with. His one brother is fifteen years older than he is, and they were never close. His sister is married and lives far away. His parents are dead.

On the whole Thad seems to be rather aloof and this is certainly an advantage for the kind of work he does. He pursues his goals, but he is not reckless most of the time. However, for the small jobs, pickpocketing for example, he is so adept at it, that he doesn't think twice before acting. He seldom drinks in public. Though at family gatherings he may well enjoy large amounts of vodka. At some point when the amount of alcohol in his blood is sufficient, but not so much that he kips over, he may suddenly begin to tell stories, so funny that his audience will be laughing hysterically. But when he awakes the next day, he's forgotten all of this.
