Regular Reading

Hi people,

I've just finished reading a book (shock horror) but i thought it would be a good idea to have some kind of book based discussion zoney type deal Ja?

Well anyway what I have just finished reading was a small series called Kingmaker Kingbreaker by Karen Miller. Its pretty much a drama about a fisherman in the big city. But dont let this fool you its fantasy through and through and was the reason my character is called Garfane.

If you in a book shop look it up and invest.

Currenty reading some Terry Brooks - Armegeddons childern right now.

Unfortunately, most of my book reading is limited to textbooks. I do like the webcomic Order of the Stick. I idly began re-reading Dragons of Autumn Twilight. Good stuff. Been a long time since I read any DragonLance stuff.

Ree! Dragonlance, did my other book discussion inspire you? Lol... anyway, Garfane, that book, is it part of a series or something? I think I looked at reviews and stuff for that and it intrigued me but haven't gotten around to picking it up.

Unfortunately I read a lot less than I used to, but I do love reading. I currently finished trudging through Tad William's Shadowplay, his second in his shadowmarch series. Its a little on the painful side, but I'm interested in how the epic will play out so I'll probably get the third when it comes out. Its not nearly as fast paced and cool as his Otherland series, which is why I picked up this one.

Of comics, I've been reading those a lot more because they require less time. I've graduated from old-school Marvel X-men and have been recently reading stuff like Fables and anything Neil Gaimen. Fables is pretty awesome... I've always loved fairy tales and these have a wonderful mature spin to them, while still retaining the cleverness of classic fairy tales.

Let's see... Of other books, I pick up weird stuff. I recently read the Orphan's Tale duology, again fairy tales disguised in a twist of layered stories on the level of Arabian Nights. I've been reading some China Mieville stuff- very original, weird steam punk type of stories. Not entirely impressed with his story lines but his character creations and ideations are pretty interesting as well as the world he creates.

Kingbreaker Kingmaker is a two parter. Basically its two books split into several parts during the course of the books.

Its not a action packed adventure but if you like characters and the relationships they build I think you'll like it.

First of all, on the subject of comics, Fables is effin amazing and as far as web comics go The order of the stick, is great especially if you've played D&D. It's just that you'll understand the jokes more if you have. Also LookingForGroup is another web comic I thoroughly recommend. Richard is by far the inspiration for me in my villain-mage type characters. Innocently deadly.

Twilight series, teenage love with vampires and werewolves thrown in. It is by far one of the best series I've read and the dominating thought behind it is a girl falls in love with a guy she CANT have, and is also being loved by a guy that feels he can't have her because she's in love with the other guy. Blah blah stupid romance? Pick it up, you'll be surprised. Also the movie comes out in november, but I have a sneaking suspicion that it might not be as good as the book series, as in.. What Eragon the movie, did to Eragon the book. So if you see clips and go, yup, stupid. STFU and read some of the book. 4 books and movies on the way

Also, Name of the Wind by "?" Drothfuss. I can't remember his first name, maybe Gia does. But it is an awesome book. About a man who was ahead of his years in magic and intelligence. Well.. I can't describe it well, without it sounding stupid. So again I recommend it, Gia recommends it, so STFU and read the book. It is a three part book. Each book is 1 day long, but it is him telling a story, he says he needs three days to do it, and we get three books. Hopefully GREAT BOOKS I know the first one was.

The Legend of Drizzt, a saga of 25 or so amazing books. If you've ever heard of a goodly drow, or a goodly "insert typical evil race here" character, the idea came from this guy R.A. Salvatore. An amazing author who writes spectacular fight scenes, suspense, fantasy and even a hint of romance every now and then. And he likes to kill off the guys you don't think will die, every now and then. It's set in the D&D universe, which is funny because hey... "Scroll of I come back to life and surprise the hell out of everyone mid-scene." I have read all of these minus the last two. They are written in trilogies, sometimes more and each one involves a certain story. All the same characters, with a little backstory thrown in (not too much thank god, read the first books if you want that junk) and then they are off on their quest. Again, STFU and pick up the book. If you are going to listen to any of my recommendations, listen to this one.

I'll probably think of more.

I did...

The Hollows series, by Kim Harrison, damn good series. I don't care if it's labled romance or not, it's not at the heart of it.

Also here is a wiki on Twilight, STFU and take a look!

Me like book. I reed.

Er... in more eloquent terms. Read Salvatore's Drizzt. All of them. Yummy. And they continue!

Raymond Feist, from Magician: Apprentice to Shadows of the Conclave. Fascinating character creation and growth. The first series "The Riftwar Saga" is a set of royal families, the second series "The Riftwar Legacy" follows those families as the sons take over the reign of the kingdom, two books between that and the third series introduce and follow the sons of those royal sons, and the third series "The Serpentwar Saga" follows those sons and introduces some low-born folks who rise to fame and fortune. That was a long sentence. Anyways, I read the Conclave series, but I think I was smoking a lot of pot then, cause I can't remember it for some reason.

Then there's Terry Goodkind, Robert Jordan (yes, I know, long winded, but epic if a little boring in chunks), Terry Brooks, David Gemmel, Sara Douglass, Dragonlance's many series' (Tale of the Twins, War of Souls, others I can't remember off-hand), Jennifer Fallon, & Tad Williams (Memory, Sorrow, & Thorn series specifically).

Wait, there's more. Isaac Asimov, Edgar Allen Poe (I've read some of his collected works), Douglas Coupland, Dean Koontz & Stephen King, Anne Rice, & Jared Diamond.

These are some of the books on my shelves that I remember without looking. Most of these I delve into once every couple of years, cause I enjoy them so much. Some of them I delve into once every couple of years because I need to refresh my memory of what happened in the 9 books that came previous to the one that's just about to come out (I blame Jordan and Goodkind for that). Speaking of which, I bought the new Goodkind today, and I can't remember what happened in the last book, although I almost remember. I'll probably have to start somewhere in the middle of that series.

And on that note, I noticed a new series on TV starting on Saturday called Legend of the Seeker. I'm about 95% certain it's about Goodkind's series! I'll be watching that mofo, you can be sho.

I don't really read comics. I prefer more substance. That's an opinion, so don't yell at me comic book lovers.

Man, who wrote all that? I guess I'll post this for them...

I rede buks 2! Lulz

I won't go into books, really, 'cause it'd take more time than I have. Really I just wanted to say that Watchmen is an excellent comic and everyone should read it.

I was going to make a constructive post here until I noticed people saying they liked Salvatore, so now I'm boycotting productive discussion in this thread to demonstrate my contempt for that hack.

Seriously guys...Salvatore?

Ah Allen. Your contempt washes off me like so much water off a duck's back. This is an opinion thread, so you're entitled to your opinion.

Please do not ridicule others' opinions. It's just not nice.

As Kamar stated, it's opinion only, and there really isn't anything wrong with liking stuff like Salvatore and DragonLance- in my opinion these works, however cliche and tired their themes and character designs might be, can still qualify as ENTERTAINING. Not everything need be breathtakingly, mind-bogglingly, over-the-top intelligent, dual-meaning, or deep as an abyss. Hell, I'm 27 and I still read Brian Jacques because it entertains me and doesn't require a super amount of brain power.

Legend of the Seeker, IS from the book. I just have yet to read it (though I bought it) and have yet to see the show.

And my opinion is that the 23 books I've read of the Drizzt saga was good. I recommend them. Just reiterating what I had already said. Ya know, for emphasis.
