Thar Shaddin

My sister got me involved in this. It's silly, but it's also kind of fun, if you're a complete book nut like I am. And it's completely free.

You get a virtual shelf and you fill it with virtual books -- books you own, books you've read, books you want to read, whatever. You can even rate them if you decide to. Then nosey people like me can look at your shelf and see what sort of books you like.

I just wanted to say that Meredith Ann Pierce is one of my favorite authors ever, The Last Unicorn one of the most depressing books ever, and Red Dragon features one of my favorite characters ever (Will, NOT Hannibal).

ok so here it is. all of the books that i could remember i've read and enjoyed. Sorry for the huge animorphs collection. I couldnt find an "all" button. They should have one... seriously. That would have helped with the animorphs and the legend of drizzt series.

Jen: Meredith Ann Pierce is indeed a wonderful author. Her prose is so beautiful and poetic. And "The Last Unicorn" is indeed sad (although, for me at least, it was the good kind of sad where I felt teary-eyed and uplifted at the same time). I found "Red Dragon" far more depressing. Excellent book, but damn! Even though it's been a couple of years since I read it, I still remember the closing lines when Will is thinking about the civil war battlefield: "Yes, he had been wrong about Shiloh. Shiloh isn't haunted -- men are haunted. Shiloh doesn't care." Damn!

Drake and Gia: Yes, I'm evil. And it's true. There are far too many ways to waste your life on the internet.

Xyon: Thanks for making a shelf and posting the link to it! I enjoyed peeking into your literature tastes. My sister is a huge Terry Pratchett fan, and she's given me a couple of her favorites ("Soul Music" and "Small Gods") which I quite liked.

Devon: Again, thanks for making a shelf and posting a link! You're quite a prolific reader! (Which I always think is a good thing in anyone.) We don't have much overlap, but my sister is just starting to get into the R.A. Salvatore stuff, so I'm sure she'll be giving me books by him to read.

I highly recommend Snow Crash by Neil Stephenson. Highly.

OK, you have gotten me addicted to this.

I only started last night and I have a vast number of books, so this is only a tiny sample, which I will be adding to. Probably a lot.

It really is!

I just wish they were listed alphabetically on my shelf. *grumble grumble*

Unfortunately they have very few of my "for-work books" in their catalogue (the only ones I've found so far are The Terror that Comes in the Night and Healing Traditions) so this may not represent my library very accurately even when I'm... as done as I ever will be... but it's interesting none the less.

EDIT: I figured out how to alphabetize them, so scratch that grumble.

I'll throw the link to mine in here (probably with an edit) once I get a little more on it. Right now it's pretty much just the Drizzt books and the Gotrek and Felix series.

Wow! You read a lot of interesting stuff, Jen! I remember reading "Grendel" in high school, right after we read Beowulf, and I thought it was awesome. I think my sympathy for monsters started then. John Gardner has also written some really good books on writing, if that's your thing.

I'll have to check out Donna Jo Napoli. I really like stories that are new takes on old fairy tales.
