Worst softwarez ever. I'm not alone when I rant about this stuff!
http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,12577 ... ticle.html

Personally, I would add internet explorer 6 to the list. Most frustrating browser ever. Mostly because so many people still use it. Eg: do the smilies in the chat room have white corners on them? Thanks ie.

Edit: oh wait it's right there. Never mind! Yes!

Ok. I officially want an iSmell.

Every section of Thar should have smell enabled, so that I can smell the acrid scent Daq's chemicals.. or the expensive smell of lavender wafting from Priscilla's mansion.. or the rotting offal in the market of the commerce district.

You know, considering the context of these forums, you have a good point. It'd actually be kind of neat to see how something like that would work out.

OMG they are so right. I hated RealPlayer, hated ME, hated AOL (which my mom still uses sometimes, and refuses to listen to my dad and me--who know computers better than her--that it's a piece of shit) and like, everything on that list.

And I know for a fact someone will try to come out with an iSmell. (^_^; )

Real Player was one of THE WORST EVER.

I'm picky about software, and that goddamn player was incredible. It takes forever to install, is way too fucking huge for something that just plays videos, invades all your menus and your internet explorer toolbar, and then when you actually run the thing it's full of ads and bells and whistles you don't want.

However I did find this program called Real Alternative: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Rea ... native.htm

And I never had to corrupt my system with that spyware riddled hellware.

Realplayer does suck, it really does, and I hate it with a passion. Although for insidious programs, anyone else ever tried to remove AOL from a system?

The damn thing gets EVERYWHERE...

Oh yeah, you can't get rid of AOL either. Scary stuff.

I do have Real Alternative. And I also have a freeware player that plays different types of video files, but I don't remember the name. Something like Windows Media Player (in name only), but not that of course.

Edit: Wow, I just read the whole article and there WAS an iSmell! I thought you were kidding! :omg: I haven't heard of some of this stuff because it was before my time or I never used it. I can't believe companies thought they could be spyware and mislead people and not have to pay for it.

Well, look at some of the stuff Google can get away with. Just because it's Google. People will place a lot of trust in companies when it comes to technology.

Like what? Aside from gmail, which sucks because it lacks folders, what else? I respect google because they do good stuff. It's based on track record. Their text only ads are great, because they don't try to jump in front of my mouse and make sounds and blink.

Once they break it, -then- i'll stop respecting their products.

As it is though, Google is the best hope for having Jabber replace horrible horrible fucking MSN messenger.

Well, Google's a little creepy because its taking over everything. YouTube, Google Earth, all sorts of stuff. I haven't heard of anything that is scandalous or bad about them yet though, but if you know of something I'd like to know. So far, I trust Google

Google does control a lot now, but consider how much Microsoft has controlled in the past (and still does) and how irresponsible they are about it.

Google got where they are now because they put out the best search engine. The google main page remains a wonderful example of everything Microsoft is not. Absolute minimalism in design, ease of use, yet powerful. There's nothing there except what you need, and it does what you need properly.

Instead of people looking at horrible bloated pieces of garbage like Microsoft Word and rewriting them to fix mistakes ( see Open Office http://www.openoffice.org which opens word files just fine ) people have learned from google's code. AJAX, which Thar uses on the chatroom and shoutbox, was made popular by google (gmail specifically). Or so I hear anyway.

Googles instant messenger google talk is no doubt better than horrible, horrible MSN in a lot of ways. It uses an open source protocol called jabber, which means that people can make clients for it and modify it for free. MSN's protocol (like yahoo and icq/aim/oscarJ) are commercial and closed to the public, so developers who make things like miranda and trillian have to hack the code, and it gets buggy.

I agree with Phil on this. If google carries on the way they're going, the internet will end up a better place for it.

Microsoft gets away with a hell of a lot. I mean, when they want Windows Vista to be exclusively used... they have control of it's main opponent, Windows XP. So they'll declare it unsupported and stop selling it. And the whole X-box 360 thing still pisses me off now.

I like google because I know what it's doing, pretty much all the time. As a search engine, it's fantastic, google earth doesn't do anything I wouldn't expect, gmail could use some folders, but it makes up for it with gtalk... which will one day replace MSN, I really hope so.

I think most of Microsoft's problems, after ridiculously bloated and useless features tacked onto NT kernels we'll call a "new" version of windows, is the closed-source "you pay now" business.

For instance, I bought an X-Box, a few years back. I did what I always do, opened it up, stuck a modchip in, threw another dashboard onto it and ftp'ed all my music to it.

Microsoft tell me this was illegal... so what did I spend £100 on? Did I not buy this black box in front of me? Or did I just buy the right to use it? Because if that's the case, I've been SERIOUSLY shortchanged.

what I appreciate about Google is, their informal corporate motto is "Don't be Evil." Sergey, Larry, and Eric really don't want to do anything heartless. At least success on the internets doesn't result in driving out Mom and Pop search engines, you know?

Indeed. Google have gone MASSIVE... I just worry that at some point Microsoft are gonna seriously try to take over and then it'll all be shit again.
