Player Name: Spaz
Name: Hina Halfer
Age: Nineteen
Race: Half Elf
Height: Five feet and ten inches
Weight: One hundred fourty pounds
Physical Description: Hina has some of the stereo typical elven features, but the flawless looks are countered with her human flaws. Her hair is a dark brown, wavy and slightly bushy. Her face is pale and pointed, but her chin is square and stubborn, throwing off the delicacy and grace so inherent in elves' faces. Her nose never out grew its button-ish quality and her cheeks are not quite chiseled and angular enough. The one redeeming quality to Hina is her large and heavily lashed eyes. Her irises are hazel, but somehow the green is more piercing than it should be and the brown inner circle seems closer to a dark honey. Hina has neither her mother's voluptuous frame, nor an elf's willowy and slim body, but something in between. She is rather tall for a woman and she despairs at her lack of curves, yet she isn't as slim as she could be. There isn't excess fat, her frame is simply larger than an elf's. There are a few upsides, such as her skin. While not possessing a glowing, translucent shade, it has been protected by her ancestry from growing to ruddy, tan, or freckled. Her hands, as well, have a long slender quality about them and her legs are long and well shaped.
Possessions: Hina has but a few dresses, all in earth tones. She wears a necklace from her father, to remember him. It is a silver likening of a leaf that hangs from its stem on a silver chain. She has housed several wounded or abandoned animals in her and her mother's house, but they have all gone back to the wild after a quick recovery under Hina's care.
Powers or Strengths: Hina's power deals with animals. She is an animal empath and her power unconsciously impacts animals near her over an extended period of time. They can grow more intelligent or be less wary around humans. Her ability to just understand what an animal needs leads to better medical care and feeding procedures. She is also, as a person very kind and empathetic towards people as well, wanting to think the best of them always.
Weaknesses: Her power is not one that is "activated" purposely. In a sense it is always there, influencing animals around her. She can sort of focus on an animal that has been bonded with her for a while, but she can't shut her power off. Its influence on animals can be un-beneficiary when it say, makes them less timid around humans. This in turn will place it in greater danger of being killed. Abnormally intelligent animals would be feared by people as wicked or possessed, and animals' instinctive knowledge that she could help them could put her at risk if the animals were attracted to her in a public place. Also, her influence takes time and an emotional connection. If she saved the lives of some kittens, they would bond with her faster than the next door neighbor's donkey. And to increase intelligence takes years of close contact with Hina. Her naturally sweet nature makes Hina unsuspecting of those who might wish to scam her or do her harm. It also leaves her susceptible to unrequited love.
History: Hina was born in the middle of May. Her mother was a pretty girl from Shim in her youth and her father was an elf who was just passing through. Well, they both got a bit tipsy during the August Harvest Festival and ended up using the hay for a quite different purpose than intended. Her father, a man named Leifur, was a constant traveler. Something in his blood forbid him from settling down. Even when he learned that his lady love was with child, the road called to him. So, leaving a necklace to remember him by and the hope that he might come back some day, Leifur set out for the open road, leaving Dina to raise Hina by herself.
Hina grew up surrounded by nature. Her mother had something of a green thumb, and if they weren't in the garden they were collecting herbs in the forest. While her mother was busy with her gardening, Hina was busy with the bugs. She loved watching a long line of ants heading to their hill, or a ladybug perched on a leaf, "eating the bad bugs," as her mother explained. As Hina grew into a young child it wasn't just bugs that she kept company with, but the mice too. Her mother scolded her for leaving scraps for the small rodents, but Hina did anyway.
When Hina reached the age of ten, Dina attempted to teach her the art of her precious plants. Hina was hopeless. She didn't understand what was so special about things that didn't move, didn't cuddle, didn't even make noise! Dina resigned herself to the fact that her daughter may just be a non-magical child with her head constantly in the clouds, "she got that from her father, that's for sure," the woman grumbled as she hung the wash, keeping a close eye on her fair skinned daughter who was having a "conversation" with a butterfly.
Also around this age she discovered the hurtful nature of other children. They called her a half breed and a bastard, saying that her father must not have wanted such a queer daughter. All these things where hateful words they had picked up from her parents, as children are want to do. This deeply hurt the sensitive Hina, and for a while she would talk to no person, preferring the companionship of her little friends. Her faith in the community took a very long time to grow back.
It was around the age of thirteen that Hina truly understood what she was doing. That her effortless interpretation of an animal's needs was indeed magic. She decided at this age she wanted to be a doctor for animals. This was farm country, there were plenty of livestock that needed birthing help. She could help set the bones of horses so that their farmers wouldn't kill them! Hina was ever optimistic and hoped to use her talent for good. She didn't understand the ban on magic then. Yes, she knew of it, but she wonder why it was in place. Still, it forced her mother to be more secretive, and she supposed she would have to be too.
The rest of her childhood passed quickly, with hopeful dreams of the future and perhaps a slight bitterness towards her father, whom she thought about once in a while. In fact, her life continued much in this manner until a couple years ago. At the age of sixteen she informed her mother of her decision for a career. She told her that she hoped to go to the city and see if there was a place where she could learn such a craft, or perhaps even a library. Her mother, a very down to earth person, frowned on this idea. She agreed to let her go under two conditions.
1. Hina would study medicine for humans, or at least midwifery.
2. She would wait until she was a least eighteen.
Hina agreed. More than anything she wanted to go learn in the city.
At the age of eighteen it was a tradition in her family to choose a surname. Hina, finally having come to terms with her heritage, chose Halver as a final bit of irony towards her childhood tormentors. She decided to stay another year before leaving, as her mother's health was beginning to ail. By the time she turned nineteen, her mother seemed to have recovered from her illness, and now Hina is ready set out and make her life in the city.
