Why I hate FF and most anime these days

Yeah everyone and his dog knows final fantasy and most people like it for some god knows what reason. I suppose the plots are epic and pretty good in some ways but for fuck's sake how can you put up with the rest of it?
What rest of it do you ask?

Oh and read at least the first paragraph of the article.
A third of pants. I want a third of pants.

I've never been a fan because of the horrible combat system, but my oldest brother freakin' LIVES for these damn games. So although I never play them, I do have a fondness for them because they remind me of hours of watching Joe play and having conversation with him. Which continues to this day. And I love my bro more than I hate the games.

I played a demo and hated it. The combat was awful, as stated, and the whole set-up is awful. If you can't get through the basic areas of the game (like fights or travel), the graphics and storyline don't matter. I played the MMORPG of Final Fantasy at a friend's urging, but it still sucked. I didn't play very long, mostly when the free time ran out. I don't understand the hype at all.
And that article is weird, but the beginning is pretty funny.

Eh, go ahead and hate 'em. For those of us that can get past the trivial crap like clothes and the much less trivial horrid combat systems, they're great games. As far as the combat goes, the newest one has a different system. While it is still quite annoying it is much better than that turn-based crap. For the clothes, they are insanely stupid, but one must consider where these games come from. JAPAN! Yes, these games are created by citizens of a country where it is quite common to see a girl wearing a big fluffy "baby-doll" dress, tie-dyed flare-leg jeans, and makeup like a retarded French fashion model. By comparison I think those stupid third of a pants are pretty normal.

Ironically I don't have a big problem with turn based combat.

Oh, and dave likes FF games too. Hence his black mage avatar. That scumbag.
I recall FF 3 being quite awesome, I will give it that. And I like -some- anime by, say, Masamune Shirow or whatever, but... But I can't get past what I see from FF these days.
The movie wasn't very good either.

Yes, 3 was def. the best of the pre-playstation FF's. The new one is teh shizz in my opinion though. As far as what you see, are you only talking about the clothes? Because 10's the only one I can think of off hand that had/has really weird crap like that. Another question, by "the movie" are you referring to that first suck-fest of a crap wad, or Advent Children?[/i]

I suppose I'm probably referring to the first suckfest, which had Donald Sutherland doing the voice of the doctor and everything. It wasn't horrible horrible, but it was boring and had nothing worth mentioning about it other than "ooh it's done in CG"
There are a number of things I don't like about FF that go beyond the getup of the heroes and the ridiculous monsters that appear randomly which you have to grind to level up. And buster swords. And gun swords. And that the main hero looks like he's 14 and swings said buster sword.
The gameplay is really linear. For an RPG you really just hack and slash your way down a path and can't influence the story much at all aside from I guess switching your party around. From what I've seen anyway. I have not seen anything from their new game, because after I saw teenage bopper singer girls shooting notes around and changing outfits I refused to look again ever.

Yeah, you're talking about the first movie. As you said, "ooh it's done in CG" is all that could be said about it. In a way it followed the style of the games, but it was soo damned boring. Advent children is great though. It picks up the story of 7 after Sephie unleashes the comet.
You're also talking about 10 two (the girls changing outfits and crap), the sequel to 10. It...was...shit. It even made 10 look like a piece of brilliance. The one I'm referring to though is 11. It has it's odd moments like the new race they created, Viera. They're like elves in personality and beliefs and stuff, but in appearance they're just humans with the ears and tails of rabbits. They did, however, boot weird ass weapons. I think the weirdest one I've encountered so far is a sawed off shot gun, the rest are old school rpg weapons (katanas, long swords, daggers, etc.) And the monsters don't just pop up on it, it's non-turn based combat and you can see them walking around in the world.
I agree on your last point though, they do take the rp in rpg a bit too seriously. They hand you a character and say, "ok, this is who you are going to play as, now, you have to do what we think this person would do." At least they've started letting you develop the character more rpg style though.

I just don't get why it's so insanely popular when there's other stuff out there that lacks the silliness
and has better gameplay. Even forgetting the gameplay, just something with better character design.
It's this anime bandwagon. Makes me need to take the extreme and hate it all. If you're gonna go to a convention and dress up like someone, why can't it be someone cool and bad ass like, I dunno, <a href="

That is probably the appeal.

- Teenagers want a fantasy hero they can identify with in a really superficial way, which is why they would prefer Cloud to an obviously mature hero. They don't want stories about grown-ups, they want to be themselves with 'kewl powerz'.
As far as I know, FF is about overpowering everything, which appeals to those who have not grown up.

I feel neutral about Final Fantasy. I played part of one and it wasn't bad, but it also didn't really grab my interest.
On the other hand, I have a friend who absolutely adores them, and gets all choked up talking about how moving the stories are (which is rather amusing, because he's this big buff boxer/martial arts guy.)
I kind of feel like there's something there I must be missing, because he had such a strong reaction... but I also feel like I gave it a shot, and I just didn't see anything that really appealed to me. I guess it's just not my thing. *shrug*
But that article is still funny, especially the third of pants.

I get the impression that a lot of it does come down to overpowering opponents but I know enough grown up people who still like it for other reasons. Most of them got disgusted with 10 like me though. They liked 7 and 9 I think. 7 had popeye arms.

He's not alone. There is something in there, even I will admit that. The stories are tragic and all the endings I've seen involve everyone dieing. I'm the kind of guy who can get worked up over that sort of thing. You should hear me get choked up or start raving about other games. Don't get me started on how great the original Marathon's (precursor to Halo) story was, or countless other games I've played and forgotten.

I must agree, that probably is the main factor in why the games have become so popular. I actually know people that love the games because they don't want to have to think, they want a hack and slash with a storyline.
