Appearance: Saldrin is a friendly older man with a demeanor that emits a sense of intelligence, wisdom and optimism. With his gray hair and glassy eyes, Saldrin looks every minute of his 67 years in Marn. He's not particularly tall at 5'10 and has developed some wrinkles over the years, but they work well on his face to give him an appearance of a wise elder. Worry lines across his brow are matched only by the deep creases that appear in his cheeks when he smiles.
He's of average weight for his age, leaning on the thin side. His teeth are in good shape (rare for older people in Thar) and Saldrin is in overall good general health, able to maintain an energetic outlook on life despite where he's spent all of his. His students find him inspirational and good company.
History: Saldrin was born in Marn to two human settlers who arrived just as the city's economy began to collapse. His father was a merchant and his mother a seamstress, and both managed to keep the family living well while much of the rest of the city suffered. As a result Saldrin was given a good education and alwas had preferential treatment as part of the city's social elite.
He was intelligent as a child and readily absorbed the history and maths he was taught in school, always craving more than was available in his small city. He graduated with the prospect of becoming a history teacher, but by the time he reached young adulthood it became apparent to him that what he was being fed by his teachers and the books available in the city library (which is located in the justice hall) was erroneous to the point of propaganda. He found numerous inconsistencies and missing pieces of information regarding the city's past, the origins of the judges and the justice hall, and the mysterious semi-deified vampire in Shim.
Saldrin overtly continued to side with the commonly accepted beliefs of the judges and became a teacher as planned, but quietly and behind the watchful eyes of the judges he studied the forbidden practice of magic. Most of his information was acquired from outsiders who were passing through Marn until he became acquainted with others in Marn who were of a like mind: the mages guild. Through them he discovered the true reasons behind the economic collapse and isolation of the region, and discovered that he had a natural knack for the magical arts.
His powers grew along with his status with the guild, until the death of its original creator put responsibility of leading the guild in Saldrin's hands. Since then Saldrin has been responsible for managing the guild, keeping its secrets hidden from the authorities and managing new members. With him he keeps a vast amount of secret information and a lot of magical power.
Powers:
Saldrin is adept at a wide variety of techniques for bending reality, many of which have great practical value. He has a knack for spotting the talents of others and actually teaching them to harness their magical abilities to their full potential.
Ball of Light - he can create a small sphere of white light that lasts until his concentration is broken.
Ball of Darkness - a simple negative of the above
Create Smoke - enough to fill an average sized room, reducing visibility to about a foot without affecting the quality of the air
Enhanced Strength - when he concentrates on his physical strength he can enhance it enough to lift nearly 500 lbs.
Liquify Object - by concentrating and touching an object he can turn its basic elements into liquid. Works on objects or areas up to the size of a bowling ball or more if he has enough time.
Blind - he can blind any individual he can see with a wave of his hand
Shock Nerves - by touching an individual, he can send that person's nervous system into shock, either paralyzing and disorienting them for several seconds or knocking them out, depending on the strength of the shock.
Death - he can instantly kill a person by touching him/her. This can be done using his liquify power or a strong enough nervous shock.
Strengths:
Obviously, his magical powers are his greatest asset.
Saldrin is very educated on the history of Thar Shaddin and the world of Pal Tahrenor. He knows things about the changers' war, the astral plane and the nature of magic and the other races that nobody else in Marn knows, and keeps most of it secret.
He's charismatic and so has managed to make many friends in the city and in the mages guild.
Weaknesses:
Saldrin is physically weak because of his age and his inactive lifestyle. Unless he is using his magic to enhance his strength, he's no match for anyone in a fight.
He's getting old, and in line with that his reflexes are slowing down. His reaction times are below average and worsening every few years.
Using his powers takes concentration and mental energy. It's mentally exhausting for him to perform magic and after a while he gets extremely tired. Eventually if he pushes himself too hard he will lose focus and need to sit and rest for a few hours or pass out.
Equipment:
He tends to wear plain clothes and occasionally a purple robe that, if one didn't know better, one might think belonged to a wizard. Fortunately most people in Marn think nothing of it, as he claims it's his "teacher's uniform."
Staff of Luck - Saldrin uses a "walking stick" that grants whoever owns it good luck. When it's with him, he can succeed in anything that involves chance, such as card games, dice rolling, taking a guess, finding missing objects, etc. It is no guarantee that nothing will happen to its owner, but it is, in the end, quite a powerful item.
Books and Tomes - Saldrin is in possession of numerous historical and magical books which he keeps secretly stashed away in his house. Only his most trusted friends know about them and have been instructed to destroy them if anything happens to him.
Money - He's always been good with money, and has enough to live quite well in Marn.
